Learn how to set up your LIFX Industrial Pendant as a plug-in or hardwired ceiling fixture. Step-by-step guide with wiring tips for chrome, gold, and cube base models.
Quick answer
For a quick, renter-friendly setup, use the plug-in method with the included cord and standard US outlet. For a permanent, flush ceiling look, cut the cord and hardwire the pendant directly to a junction box.
Which mounting method fits your space?
The LIFX Industrial Pendant is designed for both plug-in and hardwired installation. The plug-in option works anywhere you have a standard US outlet and lets you adjust the cord up to 50 inches to get the perfect drop. Hardwiring gives you a clean, permanent ceiling mount—ideal if you want the pendant to look like a built-in fixture and don't want a cord running down the wall.
Your choice mostly depends on your ceiling type and whether you own or rent. Renters should stick with plug-in to avoid modifying the building's wiring. Homeowners with a junction box in the ceiling can go either way.
How to install your LIFX Industrial Pendant
- Choose your mounting method: Decide between plug-in (use the cord as-is, plug into any standard US outlet) or hardwired (cut the cord and connect directly to ceiling junction box wires). If hardwiring, turn off power at the breaker first. A common mistake is forgetting to turn off the breaker before cutting wires. Always verify power is off with a non-contact voltage tester.
- Set the pendant height (plug-in only): For plug-in use, adjust the cord length up to 50 inches by pulling excess cord through the canopy and tightening the strain relief. Hang the pendant at your desired height before plugging in. Don't pull the cord so tight that the canopy gaps from the ceiling. Leave a little slack so the pendant hangs naturally.
- Hardwire the pendant (optional): Cut the cord to your desired length. Strip the outer jacket and inner wires. Connect the pendant's black wire to the ceiling's hot (black), white to neutral (white), and green or bare copper to ground. Secure with wire nuts and tuck into the junction box. If your junction box doesn't have a ground wire, you cannot safely hardwire the pendant. Use the plug-in method instead or consult an electrician.
- Install the smart bulb: Screw a LIFX E26 smart bulb into the pendant socket. For plug-in, flip the rocker switch on the cord to on, then plug into the outlet. For hardwired, restore power at the breaker and use the wall switch. Make sure the bulb is fully seated. A loose bulb can cause flickering or prevent the smart features from powering up.
Pendant models at a glance
- Industrial Plug-in or Hardwired Pendant (Chrome): The Industrial Pendant in polished chrome has a reflective finish that plays with light from a LIFX E26 smart bulb. The chrome shade amplifies color effects, making it a strong choice if you plan to use RGB or tunable white bulbs.

Industrial Plug-in or Hardwired Pendant (Chrome) - Industrial Plug-in or Hardwired Pendant (Gold): The matte gold pendant comes with a 50-inch adjustable cord and can be plugged into any standard US outlet or hardwired. The adjustable cord gives you flexibility to set the perfect height over a dining table or desk before committing to a permanent wire length.

Industrial Plug-in or Hardwired Pendant (Gold) - Industrial Cube Base: The Industrial Cube Base is a 3.5-inch cement lamp base with a braided nylon cord and on/off rocker switch. This base is a standalone table or shelf lamp—no ceiling wiring needed at all. It's a different mounting style from the pendant shades.
