Step-by-step guide to install the LIFX SuperColor 4" Downlight Canless. Get brilliant smart lighting without a hub—just Wi-Fi and a few tools.
Quick answer
Install your LIFX SuperColor 4" Downlight Canless by cutting a 4-inch hole, connecting the wires, and securing the fixture—no hub required. The whole process takes about 15 minutes per light.
What makes this downlight different
Unlike traditional can lights, the LIFX SuperColor 4" Downlight is canless—meaning no separate housing or junction box is needed. The fixture integrates the driver and connects directly to your home wiring. It also uses a standard E26 adapter for the included pigtail, so you can install it in existing 4-inch openings or cut new ones.
Before you start: check your ceiling
This downlight works best in ceilings with at least 2 inches of clearance above the drywall. If you're retrofitting an existing can, you'll need to remove the old housing first. For new construction, cut a 4-inch hole using a hole saw or drywall saw. The fixture's spring clips accommodate ceilings up to 1 inch thick.
Installation steps
- Turn off power at the breaker: Locate the circuit for the room and switch it off. Use a voltage tester to confirm no power is flowing to the wires you'll work with. Never skip the voltage test—even if the switch is off, the breaker might still be live.
- Cut or prepare the 4-inch opening: If installing in new drywall, trace the included template and cut a 4-inch hole with a drywall saw. For retrofits, remove any existing can housing and ensure the opening is clean and round. A slightly oversized hole can cause the spring clips to lose grip. Measure twice before cutting.
- Connect the wiring: Match the fixture's pigtail wires to your home wiring: black (live) to black, white (neutral) to white, and green or bare copper (ground) to ground. Use wire nuts and tug gently to verify a secure connection. If your ceiling box has no ground wire, the fixture's metal frame must still be grounded—consult an electrician.
- Insert and secure the downlight: Push the connected wires into the ceiling opening, then compress the spring clips and insert the fixture. Release the clips so they grip the drywall from behind. Push the trim flush against the ceiling. Make sure no wires are pinched between the clips and the drywall—this can cause a short.
- Restore power and pair via Wi-Fi: Turn the breaker back on. Open the LIFX app, tap Add Device, and follow the prompts to connect the downlight to your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network. The light will flash to confirm pairing. If the light doesn't flash within 60 seconds, power-cycle the fixture by flipping the switch off and on.
