Compare the 2150-lumen LIFX Outdoor SuperColor Neon Flex with the 800-lumen LIFX Everyday Smart Light to decide which brightness suits your room or outdoor space.
Quick answer
For accent or ambient lighting in a living room or bedroom, the LIFX Everyday Smart Light's 800 lumens is sufficient. For illuminating larger outdoor areas or creating bold colored effects, the LIFX Outdoor SuperColor Neon Flex's 2150 lumens provides far more light.
Why lumen output matters for your space
Lumens measure total light output, not brightness per square foot. An 800-lumen bulb works well in a typical 12x12-foot room as a primary light source. A 2150-lumen strip, however, can cover a longer perimeter or a larger patio, but its light is spread along a 16-foot length, so the intensity per square foot is lower than a concentrated bulb.
The LIFX Everyday Smart Light shines in a standard socket, delivering a focused beam. The Neon Flex, designed for outdoor wet locations, distributes light evenly through a silicone sleeve, making it better for outlining shapes or pathways rather than flooding an area with light.
Indoor vs outdoor use cases
Indoors, 800 lumens from a single bulb is enough for task lighting or general ambiance in a bedroom, home office, or hallway. The 800-lumen Everyday Smart Light also offers 90+ CRI for accurate color rendering, which matters for reading or makeup application.
Outdoors, ambient light is often dimmer, and you may need more lumens to compete with moonlight or streetlights. The 2150-lumen Neon Flex can outline a deck, fence, or pergola with vibrant colors or warm white, but it's not designed to replace a floodlight. Its 16-foot length gives you flexibility to shape it, but the light is dispersed.
Trade-offs: Which light fits your setup?
- Brightness per fixture: The Everyday bulb outputs 800 lumens from a single point. The Neon Flex outputs 2150 lumens across 16 feet. If you need a concentrated bright spot, choose the bulb. If you want a long glow, choose the strip.
- Installation location: The Neon Flex is rated for wet outdoor locations and can be bent to fit. The Everyday bulb is for indoor use only (dry locations). Do not use the bulb outdoors. Check your installation area's weather exposure before buying.
- Color rendering and control: The Everyday bulb offers 90+ CRI for accurate colors, plus Matter support for cross-platform smart home integration. The Neon Flex does not list CRI, so it's less suited for tasks needing precise color. Both work with the LIFX app and voice assistants. If color accuracy matters (e.g., crafting or makeup), choose the Everyday bulb.
